I love Bill Cullen, so it pains me to watch him acting like such an incredibly annoying pest in this stinker. Xavier Cugat makes a nice little dig at the cornball comments Cullen had been making throughout the show saying, "Sounds to me like you're short for time tonight."

The Smothers Brothers Show (1965) - Footage Offline - 09/15/10
I kinda like this failed sitcom starring The Smothers Brothers. Of course, I've always been a big fan of the brothers because their act is hilarious, but have also been a big fan of Tom Smothers for his mind and political perspective. I'm glad to have been able to talk to him on several occasions. Go see them live, if you have the chance, before it's too late. However, in an eccentric move, Season Three of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour comes to DVD this fall, followed by the first and second or second and first.

Here we have the season premiere of season three of The Joey Bishop Show, which originally aired in color. If this show is such a dud, and it is considered as such by every book on sitcoms and old TV I've ever picked up, how did it manage to last four seasons!? Still, it's an always fascinating curio... in small doses. This one is far better than most as Joe Besser's obnoxious and unlikable character doesn't show up and ruin the whole thing as usual. The John Forsythe Show (1965)
Just how many failed sitcoms did Guy Marks do? There is a line in the opening teaser where Elsa Manchester says, "I must talk to you about Norma Jean's diction problem," but I swear I had to play it over several times because I was certain I heard, "I must talk to you about Norma Jean's addiction problem," which would have been a strange line for a 1965 NBC sitcom, obscure or not.

Shindig! with guest Vincent Price (1965)
An amazing episode of Shindig that was a half-hour advertisement for AIP's drive-in movie Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine. I always loved the film's opening credits featuring music by The Supremes and claymation by Art Clokey.
The Mike Douglas Show with guest Zacherle(y) (1975)
I'm trying to figure out who else is on the panel here with horror movie host and singer/narrator of Dinner with Drac. Looks like Frank Gorshin smoking cigarettes on Zacherele's left. Can't quite make out the rest. Any ideas?

The New York Improv: A Documentary
Jerry Seinfeld and Carol Leifer ask Bob Hope "a question from the audience," Larry David with hair, a headshot montage set to the Johnny Quest theme and lots of other neat goodies in this obscure documentary. I can't tell if it is three separate things pasted together, a doc, a newscast, and a home made chunk or what. Some footage is obviously from 1976-77, other parts are from 1983. I dunno.
William Castle's Zotz! (1962)
I'm always a big fan of old movies that ditch the big star in exchange for a plethora of recognizable character actors and William Castle's Zotz! is a prime example. With the two leads played by Tom Poston and Jim Backus, the picture becomes somewhat irresistable. A post like this also makes it irresistable not to link back to a slight magazine article I wrote about the picture last year.

George Kirby: A Night in Hollywood
George Kirby is one of the great mimics in the history of stand-up comedy. He was quite famous throughout the fifties and sixties, known best to regular viewers of The Ed Sullivan Show. He had a remarkable voice that allowed him to impersonate voices in a variety of ranges. His most impressive feats were his bang-on impression of Ella Fitzgerald and what is probably his most famous bit, a perfect vocal impersonation of Pearl Bailey. Both of those are on display on this, his first comedy LP, as well as takes on Marlon Brando (perhaps the earliest of all the Brando impressions), Louella Parsons, Arthur Godfrey, Johnny Mathis and several more. This record was recorded in the late fifties but I can not give you a specific year.
Kirby also drops the name of his contemporary Moms Mabley on this album and does an extended version of a joke about pot smokers that appeared on the Chess LP Moms Breaks Up the Network. This record was pressed by the Dooto outfit.
Dooto Records was known best as the label that released tons of Redd Foxx material, but they also showcased doo-wop groups like The Penguins and The Medallions and up and coming African-American comedians like Don Bexley and a young kid billed as Rudy Moore.

Spiderman (1967-70) The Original Background Music!
Just like anybody else who has ever seen the late sixties Spiderman cartoon, I have always been a big big fan of that series' music. Over the years I discovered that there were a lot of people out there just like me who put tape recorders to their TV to capture the great music playing in the background. Well, I recently stumbled across the masters to the music from the 2nd and 3rd seasons. All the music came from the KPM Music library in England. I put together a podcast today that sets the original muddy sounds that played beneath the original Spiderman cartoon next to these recently discovered, crystal clear sounding masters. Learn all about the history of how an American comic book character was animated in New York, recorded by Canadian voice actors in Toronto and featured amazing music from a stock library in England in an essay I composed here.Listen: The Spiderman Background Music Podcast!
