I've seen him do this same routine on Ed Sullivan. This is how I remember him. The first time I ever saw a clip of him during his clean-cut 60s years, I was shocked that this was the same hippie who made me laugh on SNL and Johnny Carson.
One of my fondest Carlin memories is listening to his album, Takeoffs and Put-ons as a kid. It had a picture of him on the cover in all his bearded glory, but contained most of his 60s material, like Wonderful WINO.
