Oh, man. That segment brings back a lot of memories. I was in high school when Letterman's morning show debuted on NBC. I was an AV aide which allowed for the privlege to watch TV during the school day. Third period was my assigned AV time and I would tape the show for others to watch later in the day. At the time, I knew this Letterman guy was going places and the rest is history.
