WIIC News (1962)

  1. I never know what I'm going to find when I come here ...

As soon as I heard the voice, I knew that this was the same Len Johnson that I heard and saw for years on WGN radio and TV here in Chicago.
For a while he was the station's main booth announcer and backup news anchor, but I mainly remember him for his stint next to Jack Brickhouse on Chicago Cubs telecasts, a post he held for several seasons. I can't recall if he carried over into the period when WGN became a superstation.

This site is one of my favorites, Kliph. Keep it up!

  2. Love your site. A trivia note, WIIC, now WPXI was notorious for it's graphic coverage of car crashes in the Pittsburgh region until the early 80's. And another bit of trivia, I live in a small town on the Ohio River, about 75 miles from Pittsburgh, and one of our neighbors sons was a director at WIIC from it's founding in the late 50's until he retired in the late 80's. In fact, when he retired, he was the only original station employee remaining.

Also, WIIC was known for it's graphic coverage of car crashes and other disasters in the Pittsburgh area. I've glad to see that your clip did not diappoint in that area.
