He was really a good guy. We sat and talked before and after the shows. Never knew his whole history but he traveled with another guy who he called his Manager and a young guy who was obviously his love interest. He had both me and the waitresses cracking up every show even though we knew a lot of the jokes. My favorite line was he'd always catch a guy with his foot on the stage and Tubby would stop his act tell the audience we had a celebrity in the house and point the guy out and say welcome to the Show. The guys were always baffled until Tubby would ask " you are in show business right? " The guys would say no and in one swift move kick their foot off the stage and say " then get your f*ckin foot off my stage!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2398796842887862508.post-7575538285262459292023-10-05T09:52:08.568-07:002023-10-05T09:52:08.568-07:00Saw him many times at the Dunes in Sunny Isles thr...Saw him many times at the Dunes in Sunny Isles through the 70s! That's right kids, we had to read a paper...as you turned one more page, you would find the burlesque show ads along with other performers who were promoting their wares. Tubby's regal photos would always reign supreme and stand out and I would wonder, who the hell is this guy?
Your in depth reporting has brought him to life for me others who appreciate that humor. I know well the hotels, mostly now leveled, where he performed. Not exactly the Catskills...today huge high rises, just cheese beach side motels...
I even nicknamed my kid brother Tubby since he was a little chubber as a kid.
Long live Tubby Boots and congrats and best wishes on your work!!! The band I was in, Night Lights, was hired to back his show and play dance sets in a strip club that is still in business, The Golden Banana on Route 1 in Peabody. Tubby liked the band and took us with him, which was great for us because we had just started in the Showband circuit and we didn't have a full evening of material yet. We worked steadily with him, traveling around New England for a couple of months playing his show and developing ours. We then went on our own but would do a week or two with him off and on over the next couple of years. He was a riot. We had breakfast with Paul Lynde, an old friend of his, and Telly and George Savalas who came to see Tubby when we were working at the Brooklyn version of the Copa. They invited us to watch them shoot a scene of Kojak the next day. We went to the horse races with him and spent a lot of time just hanging around and laughing. He taught me to soft shoe and I got to do a skit with him in his act - a lip-sync of 'How can you believe me when I said I love you when you know I've been a liar all my life". I learned a lot about performing from him and I cherish the memories.Vinny Monaconoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2398796842887862508.post-46410540534143548182018-04-03T16:08:04.578-07:002018-04-03T16:08:04.578-07:00Tubby used to work the Emerald Seas out of Miami i...Tubby used to work the Emerald Seas out of Miami in the early 80's. One of his bits compared how a certain part of the female anatomy resembled a Taco. I had seen his show many times before (having worked for the Cruise Line). I had a dozen t-shirts made that said " Tubby's Tacos" in bold letters across the front. I was traveling with a large group of female Travel Agents at the time (Fam Trip). They all wore the t-shirt under their blouses until the appropriate moment during his show when they stood up and removed their blouses revealing the t-shirt underneath. First and last time I ever saw Tubby speechless - it was priceless.
RIP TubbyAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2398796842887862508.post-57950981241429722442017-05-29T10:46:14.409-07:002017-05-29T10:46:14.409-07:00I worked in a Miami Beach hotel that had a major c...I worked in a Miami Beach hotel that had a major comedy club (the Comedy Box) in the early 1970's.
