On the clip Jerry makes an on-air apology for a joke he'd made the night before about Mississippi. According to Shawn Levy's Lewis bio KING OF COMEDY, Jerry had originally quipped during a segment on civil rights that he'd recently realized a lifelong dream by "using the bathroom while flying over Mississippi." Local moviehouses pulled his films from release, and southern NBC affilitaes cancelled his regular variety show. Hence the mea culpa.
The oscars have sunk to an all time low giving Jerry Lewis the Gene Hersholt award. He has never had to pay for his insensitive comments about Mississippi and about gays. His philanthropy is even called into question. He only did that when he was washed up as a comedian.
